  • The Galician company has donated the equivalent of 12,000 litres of milk to the milk collection campaign, “Ningún niño sin bigote” (“No child without a mustache”), promoted by “la Caixa” and Caixabank in favour of food banks.
  • Jealsa has also renewed its collaboration with “Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance” organization, whose mission is to fight against child mortality through vaccination and a better health system in the poorest countries.
  • Thanks to the commitment of banking foundation “la Caixa” and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the amount donated to Gavi is increased by four times, resulting in a final contribution of 24,000 euros.

Boiro, 27th June 2019.The food group Jealsa has joined the solidarity initiatives promoted by “Obra Social la Caixa”, in collaboration with CaixaBank. The Galician fish and shellfish canning company has renewed the participation in the milk collection campaign “Ningún niño sin bigote” (“No child without a mustache”) and in the child vaccination campaign, “Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance”.

This agreement was formalized at Jealsa’s head office in Boiro, by Jesús Alonso, President of Jealsa and Catalina Gumma, Director of Corporate Banking at CaixaBank in Galicia. The representative from the bank thanked the collaboration of Jealsa and acknowledged before Jealsa’s President the sensitivity that distinguishes the company. “This generous donation has the great value of allowing more Galician children to be attended to during the Summer months, when milk runs low in the food banks, and to vaccinate more children in the countries of Africa and Latin America where the campaign is carried out”, she highlighted.

For his part, the President of Jealsa, Jesús M. Alonso Escurís, congratulated “Obra Social la Caixa” for the great work they are doing in social action and said: “Within Jealsa’s Corporate Social Responsibility Programme, children are a priority because we believe that, in any society, children are the most vulnerable. As we are a company committed to the development of childhood, not only locally but also worldwide, these programs fit perfectly well with the values of commitment and solidarity that our founder has always transmitted”.

“Ningún niño sin bigote” (“No child without a mustache”)

Jealsa’s donation will provide food banks with twelve thousand litres of milk. This campaign aims to solve the shortage of milk suffered by more than 1.5 million people in Spain –out of which, more than 220,000 are children, who could see their growth affected due to this deficiency. In Galicia, more than 52,000 people regularly turn to Galician food banks to cover their nutrition requirements of everyday foods such as milk.

Food banks need to double the supplies of milk to cater for all the people that seek their services on a daily basis. The target is to guarantee a minimum of 3 litres of milk per person per month. Milk is a remarkable source of high quality protein, vitamins and minerals that contributes to the growth and development of children. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) points out that, on average, two hundred millilitres of cow’s milk provides a child under five with 21% of the protein requirements and 8% of calories and nutrients.

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance

For several years now, Jealsa has been collaborating with Business Alliance for Child Vaccination, promoted by “la Caixa” Banking Foundation, and which supports “Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance”, an organization whose mission is to fight against child mortality, facilitating children’s access to vaccination and improving the health system in the world’s poorest countries.

This alliance is an innovative corporate social responsibility initiative pioneer in Europe aimed at providing companies with the possibility of collaborating in this solidarity project, guaranteeing that the contributions they make are used wholly for the vaccination of children.

The donation made by Jealsa, will finally reach 24,000 euros, thanks to the Matching Fund system of the Vaccine Alliance which increases by four times the donations received. With the formula 1=4, for each euro that a company donates, the Banking Foundation “la Caixa” adds another one and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation adds another two.
